Entry Requirements

  • South African citizen by birth (single citizenship)
  • Age 18–22 (24 for graduates with a degree)
  • Grade 12 / NSC
  • Single, with no dependants
  • No criminal record, no tattoos that show in uniform
  • Medically and physically fit
  • Be willing to do basic military training and deploy anywhere
  • Persons with disabilities only considered for limited support roles

Pilot stream, technical (avionics, aircraft mechanic), air traffic services

South African Navy

Sailor stream, naval engineering, hydrography

South African Military Health Service (SAMHS)

Combat medic, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry

Defence Intelligence

Specialist intelligence support roles (highly selective)

Programme Structure

1

Basic Military Training

Months 1–4

Residential basic military training — drill, fitness, weapons, fieldcraft, first aid and SANDF values.

Corps / Mustering training

Months 5–12

Specialist training in your allocated Corps or Mustering — e.g. Signals, Aircraft Mechanic, Sailor or Combat Medic.

Unit service

Months 13–24

Posted to an operational unit — gaining real service experience. Strong performers are offered Core Service System (CSS) contracts to extend service.

Career Pathways After MSDS

After 24 months, options include:

Continue in the SANDF on a Core Service System (CSS) contract
Apply for permanent SANDF appointment
Pilot training (SAAF)
Combat Medic / Nursing stream (SAMHS)
Naval Officer pathway via the SA Naval College
Re-enter the labour market with a recognised NQF 4 qualification

MSDS is advertised on dod.mil.za, in the Government Gazette and on the SANDF’s official Facebook page once a year.

Download and complete the MSDS application form

Use only the official SANDF MSDS form for the advertised intake. Complete by hand in black pen — no Tipp-Ex.

Post or hand-deliver your application

Submit to the address in the advert (Department of Defence, Pretoria) by registered post or hand-delivered by deadline. Late or emailed applications are rejected.

Selection board and PEET

Shortlisted candidates attend a Selection Board: physical evaluation (PEET), interview, psychometric assessment and medical.

Security clearance

SANDF runs full security vetting — criminal record, financial vetting, personal history. Any false statement disqualifies you.

Report to Basic Military Training

Successful candidates report to their allocated Service for Basic Military Training in January.

• Single citizenship is mandatory — dual citizens are automatically disqualified

• Visible tattoos and a criminal record are automatic disqualifiers

• Any false statement on the application is grounds for dismissal even after enlistment
