Who uses the UP portals

  • Current UP undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Applicants who've been issued a student number (u + 8 digits)
  • International students authenticate using passport number plus PIN issued by Admissions
  • Returning students use existing UP network credentials

What you'll need

  • UP student number in format u + 8 digits (e.g. u23123456) — lowercase u, case-sensitive
  • UP password (initial password = SA ID number, or passport for international)
  • Current Chrome, Firefox or Edge browser
  • For Blackboard Learn App on mobile: download from App Store / Google Play

Step by step

  1. Open UP Portal at my.up.ac.za

Go to up.ac.za and click My UP Login, or go directly to upnet.up.ac.za/portal.
  2. Enter your username

    Format: u + 8-digit student number (e.g. u23123456). The "u" must be lowercase — the system rejects U12345678.
  3. Enter your password

First-time users: click New users, enter your student number, then use your SA ID number as the initial password (passport for international students). You'll be prompted to set up security questions and create a new password.
  4. Log into clickUP separately

clickUP uses the same UP credentials. Direct route: go to clickup.up.ac.za, enter u12345678 and your UP password.
Via UP Portal: log in, then click the clickUP tile.
  5. Set up Tuks Wi-Fi after password changes

When you change your UP password, you must "forget" the TUKS Wi-Fi network on your devices and reconnect with the new password. This catches a lot of people out.
  6. Install Blackboard Learn App for mobile

Download Blackboard Learn (recommended for clickUP Ultra courses) from the App Store or Google Play. Sign in with UP credentials. UP Portal itself is mobile-responsive in browser — no dedicated app for the admin portal.

Application via UP Portal

UP accepts direct online applications (no CAO involvement) at up.ac.za/online-application. Steps:

  1. Create a profile (or use existing student number)
  2. Select programmes by faculty/preference
  3. Upload certified ID/passport and latest Grade 11/12 results (or NSC/equivalent)
  4. Indicate residence preference (accommodation form is part of the same application)
  5. Pay application fee
  6. Track via Application Status on UP Portal

UP application timing

  • Applications open: 1 April annually
  • Faculty of Veterinary Science: closes 31 May
  • All other faculties: close 30 June
  • Some programmes (Health Sciences, BSc Architecture) have earlier internal cut-offs — check faculty pages

UP application fee (2026)

  • R300 for SA and SADC applicants (non-refundable)
  • R750 for international (non-SADC) applicants
  • Fee waiver: households earning ≤ R150,000/year can apply for waiver during Step 12 of the online application (upload proof of income)

clickUP common issues

  • Session timeout: Blackboard sessions expire after inactivity — re-login
  • Password sync: when you change your UP Portal password, clickUP updates automatically, but you must re-add Tuks Wi-Fi manually
  • Module not visible: you must be registered for that module before it appears

Mobile access

  • Blackboard Learn App (recommended for clickUP Ultra courses) and Blackboard App (original courses) — both work with UP credentials
  • UP Portal is mobile-responsive in browser; no dedicated UP app for the portal itself
  • Tuks Email via Gmail app (add Google account u…@tuks.co.za)
  • Office 365 apps (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive) — free for active students
