  • South African citizens with a clean criminal record and valid SA ID
  • No existing bursary obligation (for funded programmes)
  • Bursary: matric exemption with strong Maths and Physical Science (~60%+), accepted at a recognised SA institution in a scarce-skill field
  • Young Professionals in Training (YPT): diploma/degree/postgrad in a relevant field, 18–35, 0–1 year experience
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT): BSc/BEng or National Diploma in engineering
  • Apprenticeships: 18–35, NTC2 with 4 relevant trade subjects, NCV Level 4, or Technical Matric with Maths and Physical Science (≥50%)
  • Trainee Train Assistant: Matric with Maths and/or Physical Science, 21+, medically fit (vision, hearing, colour vision), pass the VTS psychomotor test

What you'll need

  • Certified copy of SA ID (certified within last 3 months)
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate
  • Certified copies of further qualifications (diploma, degree, NTC, trade certificate)
  • Academic transcript or statement of results
  • Updated CV (max 2 pages preferred)

  • Driver's licence if the role requires it

Step by step

  1. Open the Transnet Talent Portal

Go to transnet.net/careers and click through to the Talent Portal, or go directly to transnettalentportal.csod.com. This is the only legitimate channel.
Tip: Older guides mention SAP eRecruitment — Transnet has migrated to Cornerstone (CSOD). The Talent Portal is now the canonical route.
  2. Register as an external applicant

Click Sign In, then Create a new account. Former employees can recover access using their SAP number plus ID.
  3. Build your profile

Add personal details, ID, contact info, education, work history and skills. The Cornerstone system often blocks application submissions until the profile is 100% complete.
  4. Upload your CV and supporting documents

CV in PDF or Word, under 2MB. Add certified copies of ID, Matric and qualifications.
  5. Search jobs and apply

Use the Search Jobs function to filter by division (TFR, TE, TPT, TNPA, TPL), location and job family. Note the requisition reference number on each role. Click Apply, complete role-specific screening questions, and submit.
  6. Save the reference number and confirmation email

You'll need the reference to query status or contact the recruiter. Set job alerts for future vacancies and withdraw applications from your dashboard if your situation changes.
Tip: Shortlisting typically happens within 2–3 weeks of the closing date.

Transnet's five operating divisions

  • Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) — cargo handling at the eight commercial ports
  • Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) — landlord of the commercial seaports
  • Transnet Pipelines (TPL) — petroleum and gas pipeline network

Common pitfalls

  • Applying outside the official portal (emails or social DMs are auto-rejected)
  • Missing the requisition reference number when querying status
  • Incomplete profile blocking submission
  • Uncertified or expired (>3 month) certified ID/matric copies
  • Wrong subject combination — Maths/Physical Science gates are strict
  • Failing VTS or medicals for operational roles
  • Multiple duplicate profiles using different email addresses
  • CV longer than 2 pages with typos or generic content

Transnet job scams

Transnet has issued repeated public warnings. Common scams:

  • WhatsApp or SMS "interview invites" quoting real Transnet requisition numbers
  • Facebook ads offering "guaranteed" Transnet jobs for a fee
  • Requests for payment for uniforms, medicals, training, "registration" or "Sasseta certification"
  • Fake offer letters with forged Transnet letterheads
  • Bogus emails from look-alike domains (transnet-careers.co.za, transnetjobs.org)

How to verify a real Transnet job:

  • Advertised on transnet.net/careers, the Talent Portal, or Transnet's official LinkedIn
  • All Transnet email addresses end with @transnet.net
  • Transnet never asks for payment at any stage
  • Cross-check the requisition number on the Talent Portal
