Who can apply

  • South African citizen with valid SA ID
  • Aged 18–35 (RRP specifically 18–34)
  • Currently unemployed and not studying full-time
  • Grade 10 minimum for entry-level (RRP); Grade 12 / Matric preferred and required for most NQF L4+ programmes
  • Some programmes require specific subjects (Maths/Maths Lit, English) — varies by host
  • People with disabilities encouraged to apply

What you'll need

  • Certified copy of SA ID (not older than 3 months)
  • Certified Matric / Grade 12 certificate (or highest school qualification)
  • Certified academic transcripts
  • Updated CV
  • Proof of residence
  • Bank confirmation letter (for stipend payment)
  • SARS tax number (some hosts require this)
  • Medical or disability documentation (if applying under the disability quota)

Step by step

  1. Identify a live opportunity

    Three main places to look:
    • Retailer careers portals — see our Shoprite guide for the Retail Readiness Programme route. Pick n Pay, Spar, Woolworths, Clicks etc. all run their own intakes
    • W&RSETA Opportunities page at wrseta.org.za/learners/opportunities
    • SA Youth at sayouth.mobi — many W&RSETA listings appear here
  2. Verify it's legitimate

Cross-check the listing on the retailer's official domain. Confirm the training provider appears on the W&RSETA accredited list. If the listing is on a Facebook page, WhatsApp message, or unfamiliar .co.za domain — it's probably a scam.
  3. Prepare and submit your application

Apply via the host retailer's online portal (most common — not direct to W&RSETA). For the Shoprite Retail Readiness Programme, register at apply.shoprite.jobs.
  4. Pass the online assessments

Most major retailers (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Clicks) require online numeracy, literacy and situational judgement assessments before shortlisting.
  5. Attend the interview or assessment centre

Shortlisted candidates attend an interview or assessment centre at the retailer's training site or head office.
  6. Sign your learnership agreement and start

Tripartite contract (you + retailer + training provider). You'll start with induction, then alternate between classroom theory blocks and in-store practical work.
Tip: Shoprite's RRP absorption rate is around 30% into permanent retail employment — completing strong, building rapport with managers, and being flexible about location all increase your odds.

  • Qualification: NQF Level 2 or 3 retail certificate
  • Cumulative investment: ~R600 million since 2016
  • Trained: ~38,948 youth since 2016

Stipend benchmarks

W&RSETA stipends are lower than tech sectors (MICT/BANKSETA):

  • Typical range: R2,500–R5,500/month
  • Cosmetic Connection 2026: R3,500/month
  • Shoprite RRP: ~R4,800/month per recruitment posts (not officially confirmed by Shoprite)

Stipends are tied to verified attendance and treated as allowances, not taxable salary.

Accredited training providers

W&RSETA maintains its provider list at wrseta.org.za/skills-development/accredited-providers. Note: accreditation for many W&R qualifications is migrating to QCTO. Commonly cited providers:

  • Retail Skills Academy
  • College Campus
  • Edu-Build Institute
  • Pro-Active College
  • Triple E Training
  • Networx for Career Development
  • Boston City Campus — selected W&R quals
  • Regenesys Business School — bursary delivery
  • University of Johannesburg, UWC, Walter Sisulu University — W&RSETA Leadership Chairs

Common rejection reasons

  • Incomplete or uncertified documents
  • Missed application deadline
  • Failing online assessments (the numeracy/literacy gate)
  • Not meeting Grade 12 / subject requirements for NQF L4+
  • Already holding a higher qualification (learnerships target upskilling, not over-qualified candidates)
  • Currently employed or studying full-time
  • Applying outside the 18–35 age band
  • Applying to non-accredited providers or fake listings
  • Province mismatch — host employers recruit locally

W&RSETA scams

Fake "W&RSETA learnership" recruitment is widespread on WhatsApp, Facebook and SMS. Common patterns:

  • Messages claiming 50,000 learnerships (similar to confirmed Sasol scams Africa Check has debunked)
  • Requests for a "registration fee" of R150–R500 — real W&RSETA learnerships are 100% free
  • Promises of R10,000+ stipends — well above the legitimate R2,500–R5,500 range
  • Lookalike domains (e.g. wrseta-jobs.co.za, wrseta2026.com)
  • Poorly written messages with urgency tactics ("apply in 24 hours")
  • Requests for ID copies plus banking details up front — identity theft risk

Verify: W&RSETA never charges fees, never recruits via WhatsApp DM, and only uses the wrseta.org.za domain. Cross-check every listing on the host retailer's official careers site.
