Entry Requirements

  • South African citizen
  • Age 18–35
  • Grade 12 / NSC

  • Willing to deploy anywhere in South Africa (DCS centres)
  • Driver’s licence advantageous

Programme Structure

1

Basic training (Phase 1)

Approx. 12 months

Residential basic correctional officer training at a DCS College — law, drill, fitness, restraint techniques, first aid and DCS values.

Workplace training (Phase 2)

Approx. 12 months

Practical service at a Correctional Centre under qualified field training officers — inmate management, security, rehabilitation programmes.

Permanent appointment

On successful completion

Trainees who pass all assessments are appointed as permanent Correctional Officials.

Specialised units — Emergency Support Team (EST), K9, escort services

Hand-deliver your application

DCS does not accept online applications for the basic trainee programme — applications must be hand-delivered to a DCS regional office in your province.

Selection — PEET and assessments

Shortlisted candidates attend a centralised assessment: physical fitness (PEET), interview, fingerprinting and medical.

Vetting — criminal record, polygraph, integrity

DCS runs full criminal-record checks, integrity assessments and a polygraph. Any pending case disqualifies you.

Report to your DCS College

Successful trainees sign a learnership contract and report to a DCS College for residential basic training.
