Who can apply

  • South African ID holders (the portal registers you with your ID number)
  • Aged 18 or older - under-18s need the consent of a legal guardian to apply
  • No blanket matric requirement for store jobs - the youth Retail Readiness Programme asks for Grade 10 minimum, with matric advantageous
  • Willing to undergo the Group's standard checks if shortlisted: reference checks, SAPS criminal record check, credit bureau check where relevant, and a medical examination before starting

What you'll need

  • Your 13-digit SA ID number
  • A working cellphone number (the portal pre-sets South Africa +27)
  • Email address (optional - the portal works without one)
  • Your school/qualification details for the questionnaire

Step by step

  1. Go to apply.shoprite.jobs

This is the official Shoprite Group store-jobs portal covering Shoprite, Checkers and Usave. The old shoprite.jobs address redirects here. Tap Create Free Account.
Tip: The portal literally says 'CREATE FREE ACCOUNT' - if any site or WhatsApp number asks you to pay, it is a scam.
  2. Register with your details

Enter your first name, last name, ID number and phone number, and set a password. Email is optional. You will need to accept the applicant terms and conditions.
  3. Answer the qualification questions

The portal asks about your qualifications and experience. Answer honestly - the Group verifies details later, and misrepresentation disqualifies you.
  4. Complete the assessment exercise

A short assessment follows the questionnaire. Once done, your profile joins the talent pool that stores recruit from.
  5. Wait for contact

In the portal's own words: 'We will make contact if you move to the next stage in our employment process.' Your registration keeps you in the talent pool - you do not need to re-apply for each store.
Tip: Keep your phone on and answer unknown numbers - store managers phone shortlisted candidates directly.

The WhatsApp option

The Shoprite Group careers page also offers a WhatsApp channel: send 'hello' to 072 773 4335 and select Our stores. If you already registered via WhatsApp, you can use the same channel to update your personal details.

You may see the number 087 240 5709 in older articles - that was the Group's application line in 2023-2024 press releases and is best treated as a legacy channel. Use the portal or the current 072 number.

Can you still drop a CV in store?

In-store CV drop was an officially listed channel as recently as 2023 ('Submit your CV at the nearest Shoprite, Checkers or Usave supermarket'), but the current careers page no longer mentions it. Online registration is now the reliable route - it puts you in the national talent pool rather than a pile at one store.

Youth with no experience: the Retail Readiness Programme

If you are 18 to 34 with no previous work experience, the Group's Retail Readiness Programme is designed for you: minimum Grade 10 (matric advantageous), applications via the same WhatsApp channel. It combines training with in-store work and is a common route into permanent Usave and Shoprite roles. See our Shoprite Retail Readiness page for details.

Africa Check debunked (March 2025) viral Facebook posts claiming Usave hires with 'no education needed' at R4,000-R6,000 per month through Google Sites links and WhatsApp numbers - one link was flagged as phishing. The Group's own Stay Alert wording: 'SHOPRITE WILL NEVER: Charge you to apply for a career opportunity. Ask for your banking details, passwords or any other personal or family information that we don't need.'

Head office, IT and other corporate roles

Store jobs and corporate jobs use different portals. Salaried roles - finance, IT, logistics, buying, fresh foods and more (23 categories) - are advertised at shoprite.erecruit.co, and tech roles at ShopriteX have their own careers page. If you have a qualification and experience, check those portals too. Our Shoprite careers guide covers all the channels.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for a job at Usave?
At apply.shoprite.jobs - the official Shoprite Group portal for store jobs at Shoprite, Checkers and Usave. Register once with your name, ID number and phone number, answer the qualification questions, complete the assessment, and you join the talent pool stores recruit from.
Does it cost anything to apply for a Usave job?
No. Registration is completely free - the portal's button says 'CREATE FREE ACCOUNT'. Shoprite states it will never charge you to apply or ask for banking details or passwords. Anyone asking for payment is running a scam.
Do I need matric to work at Usave?
There is no blanket matric requirement for store jobs. The Group's youth Retail Readiness Programme officially requires a Grade 10 pass minimum, with matric advantageous. Answer the portal's qualification questions honestly and apply regardless.
Can I apply via WhatsApp?
Yes - send 'hello' to 072 773 4335 and select Our stores. The older 087 240 5709 number appears in 2023-2024 press coverage but the 072 number is what the current careers page lists.
What happens after I register?
Your profile enters the talent pool. When a store near you has an opening that matches, you will be contacted for the next stage - typically an interview at the store. Shortlisted candidates go through reference, criminal record and other standard checks before an offer.
Can I just drop my CV at a Usave store?
You can, but it is no longer a listed official channel and most hiring runs through the online talent pool. Register at apply.shoprite.jobs first; a CV drop can be a supplement, not a substitute.
