Who can apply (by programme)

  • Young Professionals in Training - a national diploma or degree in a listed discipline
  • Engineer-in-Training - a degree in Engineering, primarily offered to Transnet bursary graduates
  • Technician-in-Training - a diploma in Engineering, for those who completed Work Integrated Learning with Transnet
  • Work Integrated Learning (P1/P2) - University of Technology students who have completed S4
  • Trainee Chartered Accountants - CTA or BCompt (Hons) or equivalent, may join in final CTA year
  • Apprenticeships - entry marks are not published by Transnet; check individual adverts

What you'll need

  • Certified copy of SA ID
  • Certified academic transcripts and qualification certificates
  • CV uploaded to your Transnet careers profile
  • Proof of registration or completion for WIL applicants
  • Supporting documents specified in the individual advert

Step by step

  1. Check the portal - do not trust third-party adverts

Applications are only considered if submitted on the Transnet careers portal. Transnet's own FAQ states: "No email applications will be considered."
Tip: We queried Transnet's applicant tracking API directly on 22 July 2026. It returned zero open requisitions across every career site. Any "Transnet learnership - apply now" advert today is recycling an expired posting.
  2. Pick the programme that matches your qualification

Transnet runs distinct programmes by level: WIL for students mid-diploma, TIT for diploma holders, EIT for engineering graduates, YPT for diploma or degree holders in non-technical fields, and CAT for accounting graduates.
  3. For bursaries, use the separate bursary system

Transnet runs bursary applications through bursaryconnect.transnet.net - a different system from the jobs portal.
  4. Understand the service obligation before you accept

Transnet's bursary terms are explicit: "Students are required to render one year's service for every year of financial aid received." Failed subjects are repeated at your own cost, and the bursary becomes repayable on breach.
  5. Get help from the right mailbox

Applicant support is careers-help@transnet.net. General enquiries go to enquiries@transnet.net.

Verified: Transnet has zero open vacancies right now

Rather than judging by the absence of adverts, we queried Transnet's Cornerstone applicant tracking system directly. Across every career site identifier, it returned a total count of zero open requisitions - no jobs, no learnerships, no bursaries.

The "Transnet Bursary Application 2026" posting that still surfaces in search results was checked individually. Its actual posting record shows it opened 6 August 2025 and closed 7 October 2025. It is expired, and its detail page now returns a 404.

The programmes, and what each actually requires

ProgrammeWho it is forDuration
Young Professionals in Training (YPT)National diploma or degree - supply chain, logistics, procurement, HR, corporate affairs, finance24 months
Engineer-in-Training (EIT)Engineering degree holders, primarily Transnet bursary graduates24 months, four 6-month evaluation periods
Technician-in-Training (TIT)Engineering diploma holders who completed WIL with TransnetSee note below
Work Integrated Learning (P1/P2)University of Technology students who have completed S4Not published
Apprenticeships14 trades incl. Electrician, Fitter & Turner, Electrical Fitter, WelderNot published
Trainee Chartered Accountants (CAT)CTA / BCompt (Hons) or equivalent3 years

Note on TIT: Transnet publishes two conflicting durations on its own site - the Academy page says 18 months in three six-month periods, while the Youth Development Programmes page says 12 to 24 months. We are reporting both rather than picking one.

The bursary - generous, but with a service obligation

Transnet's bursary is one of the more comprehensive in South Africa. It covers tuition fees, accommodation and meals, a book allowance, and experiential training, and you may study at any South African university offering the field.

Technical fields funded: Industrial, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Metallurgy, Computer, Civil, Electro-mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Chemical Engineering.

Non-technical fields funded: Data Analytics, Actuarial and Business Science, Horticulture, Property Valuation and Real Estate, Computer Science and Informatics, Cyber Security, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Environmental Management.

Selection process: screening by the Transnet Bursary Department, then an interview held in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town or Durban. The final award is subject to interview, satisfactory academic results and medical fitness.

Vacation work is available in June/July and December/January, though accommodation during vacation work is your own responsibility, paid from your allowance.

Seven divisions, not five

A lot of content still describes Transnet's "five operating divisions". Transnet currently lists seven:

  • Transnet Freight Rail
  • Transnet Engineering
  • Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM)
  • Transnet Port Terminals
  • Transnet National Ports Authority
  • Transnet Pipelines
  • Transnet Property

Rail Infrastructure Manager was separated out, and Property is now listed alongside the others. Transnet employs in excess of 55,000 people.

Training is run centrally through Transnet Academy rather than per-division, across four faculties: Engineering and Pipelines; Leadership and Functional Development; Port Terminals and Marine; and Rail.

What Transnet does not publish

Being straight about the gaps, because other sites fill them with invented detail:

  • No stipend figures. Transnet publishes no rand amount for any youth programme. Any figure you see quoted is unsourced.
  • No NQF levels. Transnet references the NQF generically for learnerships but states no specific level.
  • No bursary closing date. The bursary page's download links are still labelled "2025", and no 2026/2027 cycle date is published.
  • No bursary matric subject marks or income criteria.
  • No train driver programme. Despite widespread articles about "Transnet train driver learnerships", nothing about train driver or train assistant training is published on transnet.net. The only related item is a generic Faculty of Rail description.
