TETA learnerships 2026: eight chambers, one sector
TETA covers aerospace, maritime, forwarding and clearing, rail, freight handling, road freight, road passenger and taxi. It is the route into truck driving, bus driving, freight and logistics qualifications.

Who can apply
- Bursary: South African citizen aged 18-35
- Bursary: currently unemployed
- Bursary: studying toward NQF 6 or above at an accredited public tertiary institution, TVET college or accredited flying school
- Bursary: minimum 50% average in previous studies
- Bursary: household income under R350,000 a year
- Learnerships: entry requirements are set per programme by the host employer - TETA does not publish a general list
- Driving learnerships will have their own licence and medical requirements set by the employer

Pick your chamber
TETA is organised into eight chambers: Aerospace, Maritime, Forwarding and Clearing, Rail, Freight Handling, Road Freight, Road Passenger and Taxi. Knowing which one your target job sits in tells you which employers and qualifications to chase. -
For learnerships: approach employers directly
TETA publishes its registered learnership qualifications but does not run an open learner application portal for them. Discretionary grants go to employers and stakeholders, who then recruit. Target logistics companies, bus operators, freight handlers, rail operators and clearing agents directly. -
For the unemployed bursary: apply online to TETA
This is the one direct route. TETA states applications "must be done online, via a link that will be provided". Watch teta.org.za for the open window and email bursaries@teta.org.za with queries. -
Check the Maritime Scholarship if you are aiming at sea
TETA runs a Maritime Scholarship Programme in partnership with the World Maritime University. It is advertised on the TETA newsroom when open. -
Verify any advert before you act on it
TETA has published warnings about at least one fraudulent job advertisement circulating in its name. Genuine TETA vacancies are posted at teta.mcidirecthire.com.

These are the qualifications TETA publishes with their SAQA IDs. Quoting the SAQA ID when you approach an employer or provider shows you know exactly what you are asking for:

The eight chambers
- Aerospace - aviation, airports, flight operations, aircraft maintenance
- Maritime - shipping, ports, seafaring, fishing
- Forwarding and Clearing - customs, freight forwarding, clearing agents
- Rail - rail operations, signalling, rolling stock
- Freight Handling - warehousing, cargo handling, terminals
- Road Freight - trucking and long-haul logistics
- Road Passenger - bus and coach operations
- Taxi - the minibus taxi industry
The TETA unemployed bursary
This is TETA's clearest direct-application route, and the criteria are published in full:
- South African citizen, aged 18 to 35
- Currently unemployed
- Studying toward NQF 6 or above at an accredited public tertiary institution, TVET college or accredited flying school
- Minimum 50% average in previous studies
- Household income under R350,000 a year
The inclusion of accredited flying schools is worth noting - TETA is one of the few funders that will support pilot training.
How the money actually flows
TETA runs mandatory grants and discretionary grants. Discretionary grants go to stakeholders and employers, including non-levy-paying enterprises - not to individual learners. Those organisations then recruit learners onto the funded programmes.
Practically, that means for a learnership your application goes to a transport company, not to TETA. TETA's own learnership page directs enquiries to its provincial offices rather than offering a learner application form.
