SASSA SRD grant
SASSA SRD declined: every reason code explained
Each decline reason on your SRD status means something specific - and most can be appealed. Here is what every code means, why it happens, and how to fix it, month by month.
Quick answer
Your SRD status shows a decline reason because one of SASSA's monthly database checks flagged you. The most common code, means_income_source_identified, means more than R624 flowed into your bank account that month. Every declined month can be appealed separately at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals within 30 to 90 days of the decline.
Why SASSA declines change from month to month
The SRD grant of R370 per month runs until 31 March 2027 (extended in the 2026 Budget with an extra R36.4 billion). To qualify each month, you must pass a fresh means test: SASSA re-checks your bank account inflows and cross-checks government databases - Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and government payroll - every single payment cycle.
That is why you can be approved in one month and declined the next. A decline applies only to the month being assessed. You are automatically reassessed the following month, and you can appeal any individual declined month.
The income threshold in 2026 is R624 per month - set in line with the 2021 Stats SA food poverty line and unchanged since. (A January 2025 High Court ruling found the threshold and the definition of income unconstitutional, but government was granted leave to appeal, so the R624 test still applies in practice while the case is before the Supreme Court of Appeal.)
means_income_source_identified
Shown on the portal as 'Means Income Source Identified' or 'Alternative income source identified'. SASSA's official explanation: 'The applicant had funds flowing into their bank account of more than the threshold for the given period.'
In plain terms: more than R624 landed in your bank account during the month SASSA assessed. The system counts inflows, not what you consider income - so a once-off gift, money a relative asked you to hold, a loan payout or a stokvel payment can all trigger it.
How to fix it:
- If the money was genuine income above R624, the decline is correct for that month only. You are reassessed automatically next month - no action needed.
- If the inflow was not real income (gift, borrowed money, money held for someone else), appeal that specific month at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals. Your bank statement for that month is your main evidence.
identity_verification_failed
SASSA's official explanation: 'Personal details provided at the time of application do not match the details received from the Department of Home Affairs.'
Common causes: a typo in your name or ID number on the application, outdated Home Affairs records, or SASSA requiring biometric facial verification (triggered when you change your cellphone number, or when fraud is suspected on your ID).
How to fix it:
- Check that your name, surname and ID number on the application exactly match your ID document.
- If Home Affairs' record is wrong, correct it at a DHA office first.
- If SASSA asked for biometric verification, it sends an SMS link - open it on a phone with a camera, allow camera access, and submit the facial photo. You can re-request the link from the status page ('Request Identity Verification'). Note: the SMS sometimes never arrives (a known problem SASSA has acknowledged), and older green ID book photos fail more often - re-request the link or visit a SASSA office if it keeps failing.
- Then appeal the declined month at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.
existing_sassa_grant
An active SASSA social grant (Older Persons, Disability, Care Dependency and so on) is linked to your ID for the month assessed. You cannot receive the SRD grant plus another social grant in your own name.
Important: receiving a Child Support Grant as a caregiver - on behalf of a child - does not disqualify you from SRD. Only a grant paid to you in your own right counts.
How to fix it: if the other grant has ended, was never yours, or is wrongly linked to your ID, appeal the declined month with the details. If you genuinely receive another grant, the decline is correct - but check whether that grant pays more than SRD (the Older Persons Grant, for example, is R2,400 from April 2026).
gov_payroll_registered
Your ID number appears on a government payroll (PERSAL) record for the period - SASSA's explanation is that the applicant 'was employed by a government institution during the period'.
How to fix it: if you no longer work for the state (a past EPWP contract, an expired teacher assistant contract, or a payroll record that was never closed), appeal with proof that the employment ended - a termination letter or your final payslip. If you currently work for any government institution, the decline is correct.
nsfas_registered
SASSA found an active NSFAS funding record against your ID. NSFAS support counts as financial assistance, which disqualifies you for the month.
How to fix it: if your NSFAS funding has ended - you graduated, dropped out, or allowances stopped - appeal with confirmation from NSFAS that funding ceased. If you are currently funded, the decline stands while allowances are being paid.
uif_registered
SASSA's explanation: the applicant 'is registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or received a payout'.
Being registered with UIF from a past job is not the same as receiving UIF benefits - registration alone should not exclude you, which makes this decline frequently worth appealing. If you actually received a UIF payout in the assessed month, the decline is correct for that month.
How to fix it: appeal the declined month and state that you received no UIF payment. You can check your UIF claim status at ufiling.labour.gov.za or by calling 0800 030 007.
age_outside_range and deceased_record_on_id
age_outside_range: the SRD grant is for people aged 18 to 59. If you are 60 or older, apply for the Older Persons Grant instead (R2,400 per month from April 2026) - it pays substantially more than SRD.
deceased_record_on_id: Home Affairs has your ID number marked as deceased - usually identity fraud or a records error. You must resolve this at a Home Affairs office in person (bring your ID and fingerprints will be taken to prove you are alive), then appeal. This also affects your bank accounts and other government services, so treat it urgently.
debtor and referred statuses
debtor: SASSA's records show you were previously paid the grant in a month you did not qualify, and the error was picked up - the money is being withheld to recover the debt. If you believe the debt is wrong, dispute it through the appeals process with your bank statements.
referred / referred_safps: the automated system flagged something it could not verify - commonly a listing with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS), a duplicate ID or cellphone number, or mismatched banking details. Payment pauses during the review. This is a flag for review, not an accusation of fraud. If you suspect your identity was used fraudulently, contact SAFPS (www.safps.org.za) to check your status and dispute any listing, then follow up with SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. (Exact handling of referred cases is described by SASSA case-by-case rather than in published policy.)
How to appeal, step by step
Appeals go to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not to SASSA itself.
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals (the appeals section of the official SRD site).
- Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number registered on your application, and confirm the OTP.
- Select the specific month you want to appeal and the reason you disagree.
- Submit - and repeat for every declined month you dispute.
Deadline: lodge the appeal within 30 days of the decline (the rules allow up to 90 days). The Tribunal communicates outcomes electronically, typically within 60 to 90 days.
If your application was declined for bank-verification or payment reasons after approval, that is a different problem - see our SRD status check guide for payment and banking fixes.
Approved but no payment date?
'Approved' means you passed that month's checks; pay dates are generated afterwards in batches. SRD payments land in the last week of the month - in July 2026, for example, SASSA indicated SRD would be processed in batches later in the month (guide sites report a 24-30 July window). Banks can take a further 2 to 3 business days to credit the money (a general banking norm - SASSA publishes no official timeline).
Do not queue at a SASSA office for an approved-no-paydate status; the date appears on the status portal when your batch is processed.
