- βSouth African citizen studying full-time toward critical/scarce skills at a recognised SA institution (university, UoT, TVET/agricultural college)
- βStrong academic merit (e.g., FirstRand programme requires Grade 12 Mathematics level 5; high-school programme targets 90%+ in Maths and Accounting/Physical Science)
- βFinancial need: missing-middle focus, combined gross annual household income generally R350,000-R850,000 (FirstRand caps at R700,000)
- βSupporting documents: certified ID, academic records/transcripts, proof of address, proof of household income, head-and-shoulders photo; original-work essays
- βSome funders add restrictions (FirstRand: Black South African citizens per B-BBEE Act, first-year not older than 21, matriculated within past 3 years, provisional admission to a public traditional university)
