Who uses uLink

  • Current UJ undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Applicants who've been issued a UJ student number
  • Staff (use staff portal variant)
  • International applicants authenticate using passport number + PIN issued by UJ Admissions

What you'll need to log in

  • UJ Login ID (student number for students — typically 9 digits)
  • uLink password (set on first login or via password reset)
  • For applicants: PIN issued by UJ Admissions
  • Current Chrome or Edge browser
  • For Blackboard: same uLink credentials

Step by step

  1. Open uLink

Go to ulink.uj.ac.za (Default.aspx). The login page has two helper links: Create a password (first-time users) and Forgot your password?
  2. Enter your UJ Login ID

Student number for students (typically 9 digits — often starts with enrolment year, e.g. 2024xxxxx). International applicants without a student number use passport number + PIN.
  3. Enter your password

For first-time users, see the next step. For returning users, enter your existing uLink password.
  4. First-time users: create a password

Click CREATE A PASSWORD on the login page. Enter your student number (or ID/passport + PIN if you're still in candidate status). Set a new password — UJ has historically enforced 14-character minimums.
  5. Log into Blackboard

Blackboard uses your uLink credentials. Two paths:
    • Via uLink: log in, then click the Blackboard tile
    • Direct: go to uj.blackboard.com, click Sign in with a third-party account, choose UJ Staff/Student, then enter uLink credentials
  6. Apply for admission via student.uj.ac.za (applicants only)

If you don't have a UJ student number yet, apply at student.uj.ac.za (also linked from uj.ac.za/Apply). You'll receive a PIN by email/SMS to start your application.

UJ application timing and fees

  • 2026 intake: opened 1 April 2025, closed 31 October 2025 at 12:00 noon — no late online applications
  • 2027 intake: expected to open around 1 April 2026
  • Some faculties (Health Sciences, Fine Arts) close earlier
  • First-year registration for 2026: 13 January – 6 February 2026
  • Application fee — online: FREE
  • Application fee — paper-based: R200 (only for applicants without a UJ student number, submitted in person at a campus)

Common login issues

  • Server load during registration week (mid-Jan to early Feb) — uLink and iEnabler historically slow or time out. Log in off-peak.
  • Browser caching — clear cookies, try Incognito or a different browser (Edge/Chrome recommended)
  • Wrong credentials — international students must use passport number, not ID
  • Mobile rendering — uLink is responsive but some iEnabler back-end screens (registration, fees) display poorly on small screens; desktop recommended for registration
  • Locked accounts after multiple failed attempts — call 011 559 4555

Mobile access

  • UJ App — official navigation/news app on Google Play and App Store. Primarily for news, events, contacts, campus maps. Not a full student portal — uLink remains the academic interface.
  • uLink mobile web — ulink.uj.ac.za is mobile-optimised
  • Blackboard app — Blackboard Learn (Anthology) works with UJ credentials
  • UJ Find Your Way — findyourway.uj.mobi student toolkit microsite
