How to apply for City of Ekurhuleni vacancies
Ekurhuleni advertises every permanent, fixed-term, temporary and EPWP post on one portal: rems.ekurhuleni.gov.za/eRecruitment. Applications are online only, free, and never via WhatsApp or Facebook.

Who can apply
- South African citizens (each advert states its own citizenship, age and qualification rules - read the specific post)
- Permanent and fixed-term posts: Grade 12 plus the qualification and years of experience listed in the advert; professional posts also require registration (for example ECSA for engineers or SACSSP for social workers)
- EPWP and general worker posts: unemployed City of Ekurhuleni residents with proof of residence, usually recruited on a ward basis; recent adverts asked for Grade 10 to Grade 12 and preferred ages 18 to 35
- EMPD (metro police) and learner firefighter intakes: Grade 12, valid driver's licence, no criminal record, and a medical and physical fitness assessment; these run as separate advertised intakes
- Internships, learnerships, apprenticeships and experiential training: unemployed Ekurhuleni residents aged 35 or younger with a completed degree, diploma or N6, who have not been on a similar programme before
- Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply for every category
What you'll need
- Updated CV (for EPWP and community posts, state your ward on the CV)
- Certified copy of your South African ID
- Certified copies of your qualifications (Grade 12, degree, diploma or N-certificates); the City may ask for proof of the NQF level of each qualification
- Valid driver's licence where the advert requires it (drivers, EMPD, firefighters, inspectors and many technical posts)
- Proof of residence in Ekurhuleni for EPWP, general worker and youth programme posts
- Professional registration certificate where the post requires it
- A working email address - the portal will not register you without one
- Scan everything into a single PDF under 5 MB before you start
Step by step
-
Open the official e-Recruitment portal
Go to rems.ekurhuleni.gov.za/eRecruitment, or click Vacancies on ekurhuleni.gov.za. The City no longer accepts manual CVs at customer care centres or HR offices, so this portal is the only route for permanent, fixed-term, temporary and EPWP posts.Tip: Type the full address including /eRecruitment/. Any link that lands on a page without the City of Ekurhuleni logo is not the portal. -
Register an account
Click My account options then Register. Create a username, set a password, enter your email address and complete the required fields. Write down the username you created - you will need it every time you log in. Internal (current City) employees register the same way and then enter their ID number for verification. -
Build your candidate profile
Log in and upload your CV first - the system reads it and pre-fills your details, so check every field. Then complete personal information (fields marked with an asterisk are mandatory), the general questions, and use the Add buttons to enter each qualification, job and certification. The City assesses what is typed into the form, not just the CV, so do not leave sections blank. -
Attach your documents as one PDF
Scan your certified ID, qualifications, driver's licence and proof of residence into a single file, preferably PDF, no larger than 5 MB. The portal rejects anything over the limit, and several small uploads are more likely to be missed by the panel than one combined file. -
Find the vacancy and check the closing date
Browse Permanent Positions, Fixed Term Positions or Temporary Positions (EPWP and youth programme posts sit under temporary). Open the advert, note the reference number (for example HESD19763 or XECOD007), the department, the minimum requirements and the closing date. Some EPWP adverts allow you to apply for only one category, so choose carefully. -
Submit and wait
Apply from your own account only - the City states that applicants who use each other's login details will be disqualified. If you have not heard back within six weeks of the closing date, the City treats your application as unsuccessful. Keep applying for new posts; the listings change every week.Tip: Stuck on the portal? Call 0860 543 000, email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za, or ask at your nearest Ekurhuleni library, youth office or labour centre. Recruitment-specific questions go to coe.recruitment@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
Where Ekurhuleni vacancies are advertised
The City says its posts are strictly advertised on its own website. The vacancies link on ekurhuleni.gov.za opens the e-Recruitment portal, which is split into three lists:
- Permanent Positions - clerks, admin officers, accountants, inspectors, engineers, social workers, EMPD officers and managers
- Fixed Term Positions - contract posts, often in political offices (Speaker, Chief Whip) and project units
- Temporary Positions - EPWP general workers, supervisors, youth brigades and other short-term programme posts
Internships, learnerships, apprenticeships and the Youth Employment Programme are advertised separately under Skills Development Opportunities on the City website, with their own online form and closing date. The 2026 Youth Employment Programme closed on 3 June 2026; the next intake will be announced on the same page.
We could not find any official statement that the City places vacancy adverts in newspapers or on notice boards. Treat a printed or shared advert as real only if you can find the same reference number on the portal.

Types of Ekurhuleni vacancies
- EPWP and general workers: temporary, ward-based posts in human settlements, environmental health (rodent and vector control), parks, roads and real estate. Contracts run six to twelve months.
- Clerks and administrators: senior clerks, admin officers, executive secretaries, cashiers and customer care staff across Finance, Corporate Services and the political offices.

- EMPD: metro police officer intakes plus superintendent and chief superintendent posts in the Community Safety Department.

- Professional and management: engineers, accountants, social workers, researchers, risk specialists and heads of units.
- Interns, learners and apprentices: advertised under Skills Development Opportunities rather than on the main portal.
EPWP and general worker posts: what the adverts require
EPWP posts are the most-applied-for Ekurhuleni vacancies. Recent adverts on the portal shared these rules:
- South African citizen, unemployed, and a resident of Ekurhuleni with proof of residence; several posts recruit per ward and ask you to state your ward on your CV
- Grade 10 to Grade 12 depending on the post, with ages 18 to 35 preferred (older applicants are still considered on some posts)
- Applicants may apply for one category only and must not already be active on the City's HR system when the programme starts
- Fixed monthly stipends stated in the advert - past adverts listed R3,621 (Human Settlement general worker, 2025) and R4,356 (Economic Development general worker, 2024); the current figure is always in the advert itself
- Contracts are temporary and non-renewable, typically ending at the close of the municipal financial year on 30 June
Since 2021 the City reports that its EPWP and Ekurhuleni Presidential Employment Programme (EPEP) have placed about 7,000 residents. For the national programme and how other municipalities recruit, see our EPWP guide.
Common reasons Ekurhuleni applications fail
- Sending a CV by email, WhatsApp or hand delivery - these are not accepted
- Leaving portal fields blank and relying on the CV; the City assesses the online form
- Attachments over 5 MB or split into many files
- Applying with someone else's login (automatic disqualification)
- Missing certified copies or proof of residence for ward-based posts
- Applying for more than one category on EPWP intakes that allow only one
- Not meeting the stated qualification, licence or registration requirement
- Applying after the closing date shown on the advert
Ekurhuleni job scams: what the City says
Fake Ekurhuleni job adverts circulate constantly on Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok, often promising driver, cleaner or general worker posts in return for a fee. The City has issued repeated public notices (October 2023, January 2024, April 2026 and June 2026) with the same message: the City's jobs are not for sale.
- The City never charges an application, processing or placement fee, and never asks for money before an interview
- It does not invite candidates to interviews through social media or messaging apps, and does not use cellphone numbers as recruitment contacts
- Official phone numbers start with 011 999, and official emails end in @ekurhuleni.gov.za
- Genuine adverts carry the City of Ekurhuleni logo; the City no longer calls itself "Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality"
- Applications are not accepted via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or email unless a verified advert says so
